Anyone know of any podcasts of SXSW conference proceedings? I am sure a bunch of people would like to listen to a few of the panels and I am willing to host the podcasts if any kind soul is willing to record them for us. So if you are going to be attending the 2005 SXSW conference, if it is legal to record the proceedings, you are willing to record the Interactive Panels and you are willing to share them with the world, please leave me a note or send me an email at mark at wltc dot net. Since this is THE interactive media conference of the year, I believe that podcasts of the panels would be well received and widely circulated. PS: I know of the MP3 music downloads already, I am looking specifically for the interactive media panels. PPS: Get a free one day pass to the […]

I had this in my inbox this afternoon. I apologize for this automatic reply to your email. To control spam, I now allow incoming messages only from senders I have approved beforehand. If you would like to be added to my list of approved senders, please fill out the short request form (see link below). Once I approve you, I will receive your original message in my inbox. You do not need to resend your message. I apologize for this one-time inconvenience. This is one of those situations where email spam control has gone overboard. This is an email that was set to my admin mailbox because someone signed up for one of my bulletin boards with an email address protected by this hairbrained scheme! If an online service that you are registering for, needs to confirm THEIR existence to your email server before they can confirm YOUR existence, you […]

Websense thinks blogging is Gaming

This blog has been filtered by Websense as being a restricted site because apparently, weblogtoolscollection.com falls under the category of “Games” (?!?!). Your organization’s Internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time. Reason: The Websense category “Games” is filtered. Anyone know how I can get in touch with these people to explain to them that blogging and gaming are not the one and same? Their website is more than convoluted and there is no simple way to tell them that their filter(s) might be misfiring. [EDIT] Seems to be fixed now. If you run into futher problems, please let me know.

Blogging News, General

WordPress 1.2.2 is featured in the latest issue of MacAddict magazine under a do-it-yourself article called “How to blog in ten minutes or less”. I guess the article was written when 1.5 was not released yet and they decided to go with the safe “released” version. It is a good article with a fair amount of detail on how to setup the PHP and mysql servers, setup the blog itself and make some tweaks. On turning the page, I was surprised to see another article on how to tweak and customize the CSS and PHP of the blog. There are some extra resources listed for reference. The article was a nice surprise (might be old news, but I read it for the first time this morning) and the fact that “setting up a (hassle free) blog in ten (or five) minutes” is so readily associated with WordPress makes me very […]

Yahoo! is about to turn 10 today, March 2, 2005. They have a surprise for everyone on their birthday. Click through the Free IceCream link to get your free scoop of Baskin Robbins Ice Cream from Yahoo for being a Yahoo Member. I am not sure the frigid NorthEast is going to care for Ice Cream this week, but fun link nonetheless! Thanks SlickDeals

General, WordPress Hack

You CAN use your old WordPress 1.2 index with WordPress 1.5. Not that it is recommended, nor will the wonderful theme features of WordPress 1.5 work, but it can be done with relatively little effort. (PS: if you have not noticed, this blog has been upgraded, but is using the old template) Backup your index.php and your wp-layout.css (and all other files and the database, in my opinion) Perform a normal upgrade of your blog Open your old index.php and add the following line to the top of your file, right after the <?php Add the line: define(‘WP_USE_THEMES’, false); Copy your old index.php and layout.css to your blog Caveats: Things might break. Hacks will need to be reapplied and plugins might need reworking, just like any other upgrade Your theme might have deprecated functions, variables in it which will need to be weeded out. You WILL NOT be able to […]

WordPress 1.5 Themes Competition This is always a great idea and I was wondering when Alex and others were going to start it again. There is a Competition Blog. The theme competition will run for four weeks, with all entries being due on March 25th. See the complete list of rules and prizes. I cannot contribute much, but I would like to add $20 to the prize pot, to be distributed in any way to the winners as determined by Alex. I will contact Alex with the payment details. This was a LOT of fun the last time with over 110 styles created for this purpose.

Desktop Podcast Creator?

I am not sure if that was entirely correct terminology. What I am looking to collect are names, links, sources etc of applications that will let you record your voice to MP3 format, connect to your blog tool (Worpress support preferred), create a post with an enclosure (WordPress would just require a link, enclosures created automatically), post it via XMLRPC and upload the MP3 via FTP. A myriad of applications to download and listen to Podcasts are available, then why has this other market not seen much action? If there were such a tool, would anyone be interested in using it (read: I would write one if there was any audience for it)? What about Applescripts? I vaguely remember seeing something about an applescript that would do some or all of the above and more. Please leave me some suggestions. The more important ones will be added to this post […]
