Clever Ads

I (somewhat shamefully) agree that I am not an ad clicker. On the average, I will click on somewhere between 0 to 1 ad a day, tops. I also do not fall too often for clever advertising on blogs and websites. I have learned to navigate around them. Some would say I have developed ad blindness. More often than not, I tend to look for clever placement methods, interesting ad services and such without actually clicking on anything or navigating away from the original page. If something interests me tremendously, I might distract myself for a few minutes but rarely have I actually purchased or signed on to a product or service that I was referred to by an ad. However, this evening, I came upon such a clever ad placement that I had to think about it for a few minutes before the bulb in my head flickered and […]

Performancing has quietly released their ad network called Performancing Parters that lets bloggers to put up 125×125 graphical ads on their blogs on a revenue share basis. They give the blogger 70% of the revenue share and a very high 5% lifetime revenue share of any bloggers that you refer (which is quite nice really). Installation and setup is very simple and this can potentially create another method for bloggers to make some extra video game money. I have decided to give them a shot. They only support vertical ads for the time being but I am told that that will change in the future. I am thinking of reducing the presence of AdSense, which does not do very well. If the people that run a project can be any indication of its future performance, I would say that Performancing Partners is going to do really well. None of the […]

I have re-written this article many times and have come close to posting it but have backed away because I felt my thoughts were either too antagonistic (which I strive to avoid) or were just too self serving (which I strive to avoid as well). However, I feel too strongly about this topic for me to ignore it forever, so here is the gist of my thoughts. I really like the word attribution and I find the lack of attribution disturbing. I bring this up because there are thousands of websites that absorb and regurgitate information published elsewhere for monetary gain without so much as a line stating where the original item was published. I used to have a major problem with them until I realized that there were just too many to deal with. There are lots of very good resources on how to deal with content theft. I […]

Developers are from Mars, Programmers are from Venus This is a diversion but it was a very good read, I liked almost everything that the essay had to say and I really wanted to share it. It almost felt as if I was reading a chapter from a book on Software Management. In school I had one professor (Dr. Henry Ledgard, obviously someone that influenced me quite a bit) who stressed the importance of the software development process and taught good software engineering practices more than the act of generation of code. I remember slugging through tons of arcane code generated through a primitive graphical planning software only to be told at the end that the planning process was the most important. Ditties like “Developers like to satisfy a need, programmers like to finish” and “Programmers like complexity, developers favor simplicity” really strike a chord with me.

Google Code Search Search wthin public source code to use, re-use and as The Technology Chronicles puts it, to admire. Some interesting formatting and presentation ideas but one feature that took my by surprise is the license associated with the code. All of the code in the search linked above came back as “Unknown License”. I wonder how they figure out the licensing information? Still very cool.

Montana Tech Chemistry I know the name of the link is weird, but this is a very cool blog. I would have loved to have had a podcast from my professor, let alone a complete blog trying to engage me in the subject and get as much information to me as possible. Kudos! Web Board sucks. Thanks Blogging Times

Feedvertising Text-Link-Ads has released the beta version of their advertising service for feeds. I am a huge proponent of Text-Link-Ads and Feedvertising makes it easier for bloggers (especially bloggers using WordPress) to display ads in their feeds. Not only can you offer ads from advertisers, you can also reserve spots to highlight your own links and sites.
