Ping-o-matic is ready for deployment! Dougal‘s Blog Service Pinger has its own domain name. Together with Matt Mullenweg, he has created a pinger for the major blog update trackers on one page. There are many major feature upgrades planned for this webpage with many cool ideas to be explored. Major enhancements in the current version: * Your blog name and uri are stored in cookies, and automagically filled in for you when you return. * The pinger output dynamically appears in your browser as each ping completes. You no longer have to wait for all of the pings to complete before your browser loads the page. * Fixed the RubHub ping so that it actually works now. * Improved some of the error output. Another exciting feature of this service will be its own pinging API. This site will act like a “ping aggregator” and will take care of pinging […]

How deep is your page? – A topographic map of pages.

Ever wished you had a tool which could tell you how deeply nested the different < div > tags in your webpage/blog were? A tool to generate topographic “maps” is the answer to my prayers. It can also help you “see” your divs physically, something for which I have had to design a page with weird, contrasty colors at first, so I can see the divs, and then go back and change the color in the css once I am done designing the physical layout. It’s a bookmarklet/favelet, which makes it all the better 🙂 Oh, and dotcanada sucks.

Cool Scripts, Weblog Add-Ons

I was sent a php script by someone I was helping on the IRC channel and I thought that the method could be really useful to someone else. Try it out yourself. Here is the link. This page basically allows you to display your script online without having to email it or do anything messy. One little disclaimer is that it is available to everyone and is stored on their server for a while. So please be careful with passwords and sensitive information.

We have all been the victim of referrer spam in one way or the other and I have often wanted to show people the easy way to prevent this kind of prarsite from sucking our bandwidth (and getting in on the search engine action) SpywareInfo has a good article on referrer spam and also have some easy solutions to block out referrer spammers.

Everyone has a toolbar nowadays. Dogpile is added to that list. The reason that it shows up on this blog is because it allows addition of RSS tickers to the toolbar. Interesting? Sure. Useful? Dunno! Here is a list of features: Ticker – Get the latest news and information delivered directly to your ticker. Ticker Customization – Control the ticker’s speed, size and scrolling direction. RSS Tool – Add any type of ticker feed, including news, summaries and blogs. SearchSpy™ – Watch scrolling terms to see what people are searching for in real-time. Dogpile RSS toolbar download page.

Another interesting variation of the blogroll/RSS aggregator. This time it comes from MyStack.com. Rather than my trying to explain how it works, this is a direct quote from the webpage. Might be useful as an automatic LinkBlog. MyStack.com lets you create “Stacks”. A stack is a list of links, like a blogroll, and can be inserted into a weblog or webpage. Unlike ordinary blogrolls, the list of links in a Stack changes. When you create a stack, you tell us what items you want us to stack for you. When the PubSub system finds new items that match your request, your Stack is immediately updated.

If you have been wanting to import your entries from Movable Type into WordPress so that you can switch, but have been worried about losing your hits from Google and or other linkage, look no further! The venerable Alex King has written and posted a script/tutorial which does just what you are looking for! You can find the script here. He encourages people to use the script to build templates and other material as they please. So if you or a friend have been wanting to switch, but have used this excuse, get crackin! Find a way to thank Alex if you do use his script.

Free RSS reader for Internet Explorer

I came across this site on my own little box of ads (though I did not click on it, just typed in the URL). There is a new Internet Explorer RSS plug-in called “Pluck”. It is available at http://www.pluck.com and is free to download and use (for now). There are some interesting and cool features and some which are just lacking. I like the fresh interface, but found to difficult to add feeds. I still like the book style reader pane of Feeddemon much more, though Pluck is free and FeedDemon is not. There is no ATOM support (yet) in Pluck. The reader itself is VERY basic, giving you the ability to add, browse and group feeds. No Frills at all. I think this might be a good alternative to paying for a Feed Reader. Please leave your thoughts on this software if you have used it or plan to […]

Convert your LiveJournal, DeadJournal, WordPress blog to PDF format

I was helping someone finish writing a script on IRC and I think they have come up with something very cool. They provide a (mostly free) service which allows a LiveJournal, DeadJournal and now WordPress blogger to build a nice PDF page of their whole blog. He calls it LjBook and you can find more information about the features and install at http://www.ljbook.com/. Just like this blog and many others out there, it is a free service that is supported by its users. So if you use his work, please leave a small donation. For WordPress users: http://www.ljbook.com/wordpress.php PS: I dont know how useful it will be to me, but the PDF files are very well formatted and look very cool!
