Defensio Comment Spam Prevention: TechCrunch had a writeup on Defensio this morning and it is mostly an unbiased review of the features, benefits and weaknesses of Defensio as it stacks up beside Akismet. I had to check it out for myself. Here are some thoughts. Defensio is a spam prevention tool much like Akismet that seems to be aimed directly at the Akismet audience. Even the back end of the WordPress plugin seems to be Akismet-esque with the requirements of an API password for use. You sign up for the service, wait for an email, download the plugin, install, activate, add API key and then sit back. The major benefits touted over Akismet was a more streamlined ability to moderate comments by spamminess rather than date, and an open API that much like Akismet, can be used to check spamminess of any commenting system. Simplified ad management is rolling out now: The AdSense team had given everyone a sneak peek into their new AdSense management interface with which a publisher could tweak some of the parameters of an AdSense block without having to change the code. It is relatively simple to import your AdSense code from existing blocks and then tweak the settings. Changes take upto a minute to display and you cannot change the size of the block through this new interface. Look for it under the “Manage Ads” menu at the top when you are logged into AdSense. Saturday Subscriber Count Drop?: If you were wondering what caused a huge drop in your subscriber count this morning in the Feedburner chicklet, their blog has an explanation. I figured Google was not returning their numbers correctly since subscriber details showed none from Google. The whole Feedburner chicklet thing is a little very narcissistic and might be less valuable/reliable than most of us would like to believe, but I am a sucker for stats. PS: Mr. Cashmore, you need a search form that is easy to find.

Daniel Cuthbert has written a paper on ModSecurity and WordPress. While I praise the work and the effort, I am not sure why they did not find it in themselves to protect the PDF document that they are distributing using some sort of an SHA1 checksum or the like to ensure the integrity of the download. Now I know that these guys know what they are doing but I have a problem with security related papers, help documents, scripts and other items when they cannot be verified with the source and the source itself cannot be verified with the original author of the product. I have always been a big proponent of mod_security and I think it provides a comprehensive layer of web security without as much overhead. I have added a few plugins and tweaked a bit of the code on WeblogToolsCollection to keep things fresh and new. Here is the list. WhoSeesAds: I have been meaning to wean out the Google AdSense ads for my regular visitors and Ozh’s plugin was the ticket. If you have not used it yet, you are missing out. It is one of the finest pieces of useful and well thought out code for WordPress bloggers. I have the ads set so they only show for posts older than 30 days or if you are not a regular visitor. I like the lack of distractive AdSense blocks. There is also a distinct benefit that I had not anticipated. The best paying AdSense block on this blog has also been the most obnoxious that regular readers have complained about. I can now display those ads to people that happen to stop by […]

AdaptiveBlue SmartLinks for WordPress: AdaptiveBlue recently released their SmartLinks product for bloggers and also released a WordPress plugin that makes all of this easier to implement and manage. From the authors’ blog SmartLinks are automatically inserted, helping readers to discover, explore, and connect to relevant information from around the web. The links are to pages about books, music, movies, stocks, recipes, restaurants, gadgets, people, movie stars and various entertainment and media. Apparently SmartLinks is already in use on sites such as Amazon.com and Yahoo Finance. SmartLinks could be a cool way to display all the media that is related to a few words in your post but I believe this service would have a wider audience if one could include their Amazon Affiliate ID on the links that are generated. WordPress Functions Implementation History Tool: Ozh has come up with a fantastic WordPress Function Implementation History tool that is essentially a way to check when a function was implemented in WordPress and when and if it was removed in a trendy axajified manner, it will let you search across nearly 1900 functions through 31 WordPress releases, from 0.71 to 2.3. He also released a map of WordPress functions through all the versions. Very useful tool indeed. Thank you Ozh!

The Google Reader recently started displaying the number of feed readers per feed in their reader interface. This count is of the number of people that read your blogs’ feed through various Google systems and NOT the total count of feed readers for your blog (as might be available through the Feedburner chicklet). You can log into Google Reader and type the feeds’ name into the “Add Subscription” form which essentially does a search for the feed name and provides you with the results. There has been some coverage of bloggers who have been looking at this “new” feature with rose colored glasses while others have been extremely critical of the numbers themselves and of Google displaying these numbers and the blogosphere seems to be somewhere in the middle.
