CiteULike: A free online service to organize your academic papers: A del.icio.us like bookmarking system (complete with tags and an API) for academic papers! You create an account (free), drag a bookmarklet to your toolbar and henceforth, every time you encounter an interesting looking paper online you click your CiteULike bookmark instead of (or as well as) your del.icio.us bookmark. CiteULike enters the link to the paper in your “library” and lets you add tags, note whether you’ve read it and whether it’s high priority to read it, and add freeform public or private notes if you like. Thanks for the writeup from Jill/Txt

WordPress Plugin: Photopress is a plugin that adds a set of helper tools to WordPress to make working with images much easier. It adds a pop-up uploader and a pop-up image browser to the posting page and a groovy random image function for your template. As it says on the developer site, it is a congolmeration of tools developed by various individuals and internal WordPress functionality to make photoblogging easy for WordPressers. It even comes with a Random Image function. I would love to hear some feedback on this. Sounds like it might just be the winner WordPress photobloggers have been looking for!

I had this in my inbox this afternoon. I apologize for this automatic reply to your email. To control spam, I now allow incoming messages only from senders I have approved beforehand. If you would like to be added to my list of approved senders, please fill out the short request form (see link below). Once I approve you, I will receive your original message in my inbox. You do not need to resend your message. I apologize for this one-time inconvenience. This is one of those situations where email spam control has gone overboard. This is an email that was set to my admin mailbox because someone signed up for one of my bulletin boards with an email address protected by this hairbrained scheme! If an online service that you are registering for, needs to confirm THEIR existence to your email server before they can confirm YOUR existence, you […]

A Whole Lotta Nothing: Blogspot is hurting America: A large number of the recent spam comments that my blogs have received recently, link to Blogspot pages that are spam sites. I was not aware that these could be generated via a script, but it looks like free hosted blogs are quickly becoming spammer havens.

Cool Scripts, WordPress Hack

Ever since Geoff wrote the small script to backup a WordPress installation automatically, I have wanted to make his script email me with the backups once they are done. So I modified the original script to email a given address with the backup files (the backup files are deleted from the server once the email is sent) I ran into some problems while running the script on my own server because of the sheer size of the backups. I rewrote it to FTP the backups to another server to prevent killing my mail server. However, smaller installations (anything less than 500 megs) would benefit from the email backup and I decided to release the code. You can download the script from here, copy it to a location on your drive that would allow execution, give it execute permissions (chmod 755 backupwp.sh) and then write a small cron entry that runs […]
