I updated the original subscribe plugin, recently, using the database to store the subscriber list instead of a text file, as well as to require confirmation of all (un)subscription requests. It includes a management page to install the database tables, and to manage the list of subscribers. Check out the Subscribe2 beta announcement for the download link.

Web Ethics, WordPress Hack

Over the last couple of days my servers have been suddenly getting extremely slow and non-responsive at times. The system load averages climb to the hundreds and nothing responds. I was watching the server logs while working on some code and noticed that I was getting referer spammed. As I continued to look (and log) in amazement, a handful of machines made a large number of requests to my server, all with the tell tale referer spam clues (there were about 10,000 total requests in that attack). My understanding is that when the spammer requested such a large number of pages in quick succession, the server buried itself in […]

What is an AdSense Jail?: Every found yourself in one? I know I have! [EDIT] Let me explain a little. For those of you that advertise on your blogs, have you ever gotten into the situation where one fine morning your blog starts to generate a substantially large sum of revenue because of something you wrote (I mean substantial, really) and then you update your blog and the revenue dissappears as suddenly as it appeared? Once this happens to you more than a couple of times, and you stumble upon one of those again, you are afraid to update the blog till the deluge dissappears. This is what I term a “Jail”. The idea came to me from PRI. They have a bunch of recorded shows on a CD called “Driveway Moments” where you’re driving home, listening to a story on your local NPR station. Suddenly, you find yourself in […]

Cool Scripts, LinkyLoo

Yahoo! Slurp crawl delay: Reduce the number of requests that Yahoo! Slurp crawler makes to your site. I wish Google had something of similar nature since I almost get DDoS’d at time by the Google crawlers (multiple crawlers seem to hit the site at the same time, requesting every article in rapid succession). Not that I am complaining that Google crawlers visit this blog. 😉

WordPress Plugin: Smart Unread Comments: Cookie based plugin that highlights comments unread by a visitor. Interesting twist, but too much overhead for a blog such as mine. Could be useful in dicussion based blogs.
