WordPress Beta Tester allows you to get involved with the WordPress development process by making it easy for you to get early access to nightly builds and beta releases using the core upgrader.

The choice you have is:

  • Point release nightlies - This contains the work that is occurring on a branch in preparation for a x.x.x point release.  This should also be fairly stable but will be available before the branch is ready for beta.
  • Bleeding edge nightlies - This is the bleeding edge development code which may be unstable at times. Only use this if you really know what you are doing.

Once you enable the plugin it will by default switch your blog to the “Point release” stream and if you want to switch to the “Bleeding edge” stream then you will need to go to the Tools … Beta Testing page and configure the plugin there:

Please note: Once you have switched your blog to one of these beta versions of software it will not always be possible to downgrade as the database structure maybe updated during the development of a major release.

For many many people a changelog is a very important thing. It is all about justifying to your users why they should upgrade to the latest version of a plugin. Changelogger helps you keep track of what has changed in a new plugin version at a glance, right on the plugin listing page. Without opening the thickbox. Without browsing to the Changelog tab.

That’s basically it. Given the fact the plugin author provides a changelog section, Changelogger takes action. In case there’s no changelog section provided, the plugin encourages the blog owner to ask the plugin author to add a changelog section. Looks like this:

Installation is as easy as pie. Download, install, activate, done. Changelogger requires at least WP 2.7.

The plugin can be used with my Plugin Debug Queries (WP plugin SVN) and thus the analysis and optimization of the blog can be used. Debug queries will be integrated into the frontend of Debug Objects and is only for users with appropriate rights possible.

The plugin does not filter values and should only be used for information and optimization, I don’t recommended to use it on a live blog. For developers it can rapidly deliver data, which is useful in a development environment.

There are no data in the database and there are no settings. Therefore, the installation is pretty simple: Just upload the Plugin in the Plugin directory or use the automatic installation of the backend to install and activate the Plugin. In the footer of the frontend of the blog, you can see the information.

Working with a single large export file can be difficult. Use this plugin to create multiple export files that contain sections of your blog. This plugin has been tested on WP versions 2.7 - 2.8 & WPMU 2.7.X.

All restriction options provided in the plugin are *optional*. If no restrictions are selected, this plugin generates the same export file as the export feature built into WP & WPMU.

Max Image Size Control plugin adds the functionality to change the max image size each category and post.

Install

  1. Copy the max-image-size-control directory into your wp-content/plugins directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu in WordPress

  4. That’s it! :)

How to use
Open `Settings > Max Image Size Control` and set image sizes each category ID and post ID. Multiple category ID and post ID need to be comma-deliminated. If you would like to crop images to exact dimensions, make Crop checked.

ImageShack Offloader is a plugin that allows you to use ImageShack as a free CDN for your images, with maximum convenience.

It has a friendly settings page where you can set up all the details, such as which image sizes should be offloaded and in what order.

You don’t have to modifiy your posts: Post content with images that are offloaded is filtered by the plugin, replacing image URLs automatically.

You can use the default WP interface for uploading images: You don’t need to go to the ImageShack site at all.

You have a backup of your images on your server: After offloading an image, this plugin doesn’t delete the copy from your server.

Live Blogging is a plugin developed to support blogs that are doing live “micro” blogging of running events, such as major sport events or tech conferences. It was originally developed for the University of York’s Nouse website (The Roses sporting tournament was the first event to use it).

It provides a simple backend interface, and has multiple hooks that can be triggered when a new live blog post is made - at the moment it has a hook to push to Twitter and also to Meteor.

The plugin is most effective when used alongside Meteor. When Meteor is used, the events are automatically pushed (using Comet technology) to all of your currently connected readers where they slide in at the top of the post - this is the same technology as Twitterfall, whose creators advised in the creation of this plugin. Comments on those posts also automatically appear at the end.

Using the plugin to blog these kind of events has two obvious advantages - reducing load on your server of constant pageloads from people refreshing your blog, and also to get your entries out quicker than anyone else. Also the sliding transition is cool!

Tweetable is a WordPress Plugin intended to help integrate Twitter into your blog. It can tweet your blog posts as they are published. (URLs are shortened with the URL shortener of your choice, and Google Analytics campaign tags can be included.) You can display your latest tweet(s) in your blog sidebar with a customizable widget, which can also display your follower count.

The following features are also included:

  • Tweet from within WordPress. The plugin adds a dedicated Twitter page where you can browse your friends timeline and post updates. An optional quick-tweet Dashboard widget is available as well.
  • Set the minimum user level to access the Twitter page in the WordPress backend.

PICS (Picture Increment Cron System) is a WordPress Plugin designed to allow you to automatically post pictures to your WordPress blog at a administrator determined timed interval.

History:

One of us runs a website where they post a new photo every day from a very large collection. However, that same one person is pretty lazy when it comes to creating a new post for each photo. So this WordPress Plugin was the solution for that one persons laziness.

Features / Benefits:

  • User defined timed posting of images from a single directory.
  • Optional incremented title (ex. Vacation Photo # 1, Vacation Photo #2, Vacation Photo #1,345, etc…)
  • Increment starting number can be set to any numeric value.
  • Posts can be added to the categories of your choice.
  • Posts can have the tags of your choice.
  • Images can have the ALT tag of your choice.
  • Image directory can be set by user.
  • Images are chosen at random.
  • No image will be repeated. (Unless you have the same photo under different names.)

“Nonce! Please” is a simple plugin that prevents brute-force comments and trackbacks from spammer.

Description

Akismet is a great plugin to block spam comments/trackbacks. It detects spams completely. But, Akismet allows to accept unsolicited feedbacks, and to store them in the database. It is weaker act to fight with spams. A better way is to reject them.

Also, the architecture of WordPress is vulnerable for spammer. Because the comment API is fixed URL like: “wp-comments-post.php”, “wp-trackback.php, or “http://blog.example.com/archives/99/trackback/”. Therefore, spammers can easily post bulk comments/trackbacks to WordPress weblogs.

“Nonce! Please” add a nonce (random strings) to the comment hidden field and/or the trackback URL. A valid comment and/or trackback should have a nonce string. Bulk feedbacks will not have nonce.
This plugins also verifies that a new comment/trackbacks has the valid nonce. If there is no nonce or an invalid one, the feedback is rejected.

Adding and detecting nonce is automatic, users are not do anything!

Installation

“Nonce! Please” can be installed in 2 steps:

  1. Unzip “nonce_pleaseNNN.zip” archive and put only the nonce_please.php file into your “plugins” directory (wp-content/plugins/) of the server.
  2. Activate the plugin.

The licence of this plugin is GPL v2.

Restrictions

If you are using cacheing plugins (such as WP-Cache, WP Super Cache), make sure that caching time less than 12 hours. Because WordPress nonce string will change in 12 hours cycle and valid for 24 hours. If caching longer than 12 hours, invalid nonce will be survived at your site.

Role Scoper is a comprehensive drop-in enrichment for WordPress content permissions. Broaden or narrow reading, editing or administrative access to selected users or groups on a page-specific, category-specific or other content-specific basis.

Scoped Role Columns in Manage Posts

Existing WordPress roles and anonymous reading capabilities are honored by default, but with Role Scoper can be:

  • supplemented with content-specific role assignment
  • disregarded if a section (category) or object (page/post) is marked exclusive

Scoped role requirements and assignments are reflected in every aspect of the WordPress interface, from front end content and navigation to administrative post and comment totals. Content administrators control who can view/edit/administer specified content, and what content anonymous users see.

Section and object roles can be set to propagate to child sections/objects. Create User Groups and assign roles to them. Choose whether unqualified front-end content is hidden or replaced with a customizable teaser. The object role assignment UI (a new tab in the Post/Page edit form) indicates where users have a role implicitly applied through another blog, section or object role assignment.

RSS output and XML-RPC editing also follow your scoped role assignments and requirements. Template functions are available to allow themes to format exclusive content and teasers distinctively. Role Scoper had its first public release on May 15th and has recently passed 1100 downloads. In these 2 months, the plugin has benefited greatly from an enthusiastic early core of users whose feedback has allowed me to flush out lots of bugs through 18 beta revisions. Role Scoper is not an easily documented set of useful new features, but a new layer underlying all your content editing and delivery. Some have found all the new knobs a little overwhelming. But if you really want to push for sophisticated access control or collaborative editing, there are some early success stories that might persuade you to take the plunge.

Does it seem strange to you that pages have a nice, intuitive way to apply various themes to them and categories don’t? Would you like to have a way for posts to be styled based on their category? I did on more than a couple of occasions. So for my entry into this contest I decided to make a plugin that would solve these two problems. All plugin details are available at the Idealien Category Enhancements (ICE) home page.

The first place I tried the plugin out was to create a set of AJAX-based category / post views for a client project (blacksmith artist photo gallery). The code for that is not yet “clean enough” that I feel comfortable sharing it, but looking at that site might give you a hint of the potential that this plugin offers. As I was creating that fast loading photo gallery, I realized that I may have unlocked another small piece of the ‘Can Wordpress become a fully-featured CMS?’. This plugin could allow one installation of Wordpress to be any / all of the following:

  • An event calendar and each category is a different calendar type.
    Each post takes you to a detailed view of the date with event details.
  • Photo Gallery
  • Multi-level / genre portfolio with extensive use of custom fields.
  • Contact list
  • Product database
  • etc

Looking at some of the other plugins that are part of the contest, at first glance my plugin might not seem that incredible. But I’d ask that the judges consider what a theme designer with bold vision could design as a result of using this plugin which could not be done as easily without. By integrating the template into the manage > categories menu, it brings consistency to the template process of categories, posts and pages.

WordPress Image Browser Extender is a plugin that will your to easily browse your images that are already uploaded to your website, select all the ones you want to add to your post or page, the structure you would like to use and then it inserts all appropriate syntax.

This plugin is pretty simple, it addes more functionality to the rich text editor for WordPress.  Just upload the plugin, activate it, select the features you want and you are on your way.

Update: Tabbed Widgets have become much smarter now. If a user clicks on a link inside one of the tabbed widgets, the same widget will be opened by default on the landing page. This is an extremely useful feature if tabbed interface is used for category and archive navigation. You can try this feature on my blog.

Accordion and Classic Horizontal Tabs

There are two tab style to choose from: tabs and accordion. If you enable tab rotation, accordion style tabs will automatically pause the rotation when the reader hovers the widget and will resume rotation when mouse leaves the tabbed widget block. Such behavior makes the rotation feature user friendly and unobtrusive, while giving the tabbed content maximum exposure.

These are the configuration options for each of the tabbed widgets. Simply select an existing widget from a drop-down menu and specify the tab title. Automatic rotation and random start tab settings can be set individually for each of the tabbed widgets.

Keep in mind that the way tabs are rendered and look depends on the theme you are using, its CSS identifiers and sidebar widget settings. However the solution is usually a few extra lines of CSS that you have to add to style.css file.

If you’ve given up the low-paying and slightly obtrusive ad networks used by many new bloggers, in favor of selling ads directly, you may have been frustrated with the excessive time involved managing your ads. Not only do you have to find advertisers to sponsor your blog, you have to manually edit your template to put the ad in, and then head over to your favorite calendar app to set an alert to remind you when to take the ad down.

Time consuming practices like those are a thing of the past. The WP125 plugin can help you manage your ads more efficiently, leaving you with more time to write new posts. The plugin adds a new “Ads” menu to the WordPress admin, featuring submenus for tweaking display settings and adding and removing ads.

Features include:

  • One or two column ad display, and support through template tags to implement your own unconventional design.
  • Show as many ads as you want, and in either manual or random order
  • Keep track of how many times an ad is clicked
  • When creating a new ad, you don’t have to calculate the end date yourself. Just input how many days you wish the ad to run for, and the correct date will be applied. The ad will be automatically taken down when the time comes.
  • When an ad run is over, the record is archived on the Inactive ads screen, so you can check on the final click count, or revive the ad for another run.

MultiSiteManager is a plugin which will handle both backups and upgrades, and it will do this for any number of WordPress blogs. After the initial release some days ago, a slightly revised version of MultiSiteManager has been released.

The Vent events system allows you to use the standard WordPress scheduled posts functionality to enter, list and manage future events.

The administrator can setup the criteria that the Vent system uses to identify an Event. This enables you to continue to enter scheduled posts into WordPress (and more importantly, for them to function exactly as before) whilst still using the new Event functionality.

The simplest of criteria is to mark any events with a distinct category or tag, alternatively you can use any combination of the settings shown above, including looking for a string at the start of a post title (such as “Event:”).

Viewing Events

There are two widgets included with the plugin. One to show the next event and one to list the upcoming events (up to 15), in addition the plugin can add the next event to the top of your home page.

Event Lists

The plugin adds a number of URL permalinks to your system that will allow you and your users to view events taking place over a certain period of time (such as next week or next month). These can be set up within the options of the plugin.
