And the winner of the Grand Prize of the WordPress Plugin Competition 2009 is:

Section Widget by Godfrey Chan

Godfrey’s plugin provides a way to display section specific content on your WordPress sidebar with an easy to use interface. This new version comes with tabs support, so creating your tabbed section widget is just a few clicks away. Plus, with shortcode support, the possibilities are limitless! This plugin is well rounded, consistently preferred by all of our judges and reviewers and was well liked by the audience as well.

Congratulations to the Grand Prize Winner!

Thanks to Keith D’Souza, Ozh and Jeff Chandler for taking on the mammoth task of judging the competition and helping me put it all together. These people have done it all for the love of the community and their passion for WordPress, and I commend them for all of their efforts. Along with the judges, the competition sponsors played a major role in making all of this possible. WPMU, BuySellAds, WhiteShadow, WPWebHost, Ozh and Techtites were very generous with their donations and we hope to garner their support in future competitions as well. To all the well wishers, readers, reviewers and the plugin developers who participated in the contest, thank you for all your help. Please check back next year for another exciting Plugin Competition. The winner will receive their prize money by the end of the following week.

So after much deliberation by our judges, tallying of the votes from readers, after coming up with an algorithm for all of this to come together, we finally have the results for the Weblog Tools Collection Plugin Competition. The competition was very close with year with, and as one of the judges put it, quite a few gems were found in the rough.

There are two runner ups in the competition this year with the exact same scores and a final Grand Prize winner who eked past their competition by a single point. The runner ups will win a cash prize of $500 each and the Grand Prize Winner will receive a cash prize of $2000!

To break from tradition, we will release the runner ups today, followed by the release of the Grand Prize Winner on Monday. The following runner ups are in no particular order since they had the same final score.

The first Runner up is, drum roll please:

Advanced Export for WP and WPMU by Ron Rennick

Ron’s plugin provides WordPress users (both WordPress and WordPress Mu) the ability to break up their exports into multiple files with each file containing different sections of their blog. Ron wins $500 in cash.

The second Runner up is:

Live Blogging by Chris Northwood

Chris’ plugin provides live micro blogging functionality to WordPress blogs using Meteor technology. Both comments and posts are automatically updated on viewers’ blogs with the plugin. Chris wins $500 in cash.

Congratulations to the runner ups for their fantastic work! Check back tomorrow for the Grand Prize Winner of the Plugin Competition. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the sponsors, judges, well wishers, readers, reviewers and to the plugin developers who participated in the contest. The winners will receive their prize money by the end of the following week.

Rich Related Posts used to generate content display on the front page of BigCityPix – click thru to see it…

Plugin Description

Rich Related Posts plugin facilitates related posts functionality where posts can be enriched with groups of links to blog posts (or other sites), defined by headline and thumbnail.

RRP is a powerful CMS solution to quickly and easily create multiple groups of rich related content with images using tools such as combination search/entry fields and element units consisting of headline + permalink + image url. Shortcode can be instantly inserted into posts, and can even be used in sidebar text widgets.

Why Use the Rich Related Posts Solution?

You need to be able to locate content and present it to visitors on your site with images and links back to your posts, pages as well as even other sites. But it can be difficult and require a lot of trial and error to get complex layouts of images and text to come out looking right. Sometimes it’s next to impossible to get something published looking like you need it to without it slipping around and getting compromised switching back and forth between the HTML and visual editors. This is a plugin for those of us who don’t want to have to program tables into our posts. It’s also a plugin for WordPress users looking for a fresh new way to search for and enter content.

Rich Related Posts Plugin Overview

Locating Content:

RRP simplifies the process of searching for content and entering the elements of the data. RRP virtually eliminates the need to manually copy and paste URLs from your browser’s URL field into WordPress. The same goes for tracking down images within the WordPress admin and Media Library — most specifically when it comes to thumbnail images associated with posts. You no longer need to drill into a post to copy and paste the image URL. You don’t even need to drill into the WP Media Library either. Instead, combination search/data-entry fields go directly to archive to provide a list of links.

Entering Content:

When you click on a link from the Rich Related Posts search results page, both the post’s url as well as the associated post thumbnail url are automatically entered together to become part of a single RRP ELEMENT. The last component is the ELEMENT’s custom HEADLINE which you type in — now you’ve created a contained unit of data that represents your single piece of content.

Repeat the steps up to 10 ELEMENTS until you’ve got a group of RICH RELATED POSTS.

Publishing Content:

Insert the shortcode into your post and RRP handles the layout. No more messing around trying to get a layout of images and graphic to hold in place. RRP locks your display and presents it just the way you want it as per the RRP TEMPLATE you have customized specifically for your site.

Conveniently enter the same RRP GROUP in post after post, after post.

Rich Related Posts Editor and Walk-Through

While on any WP edit post page, find the Rich Related Posts EDITOR in your center column where you can create up to ten groups.

When editing a new group or an existing one, you add and edit elements within the group. Elements consist of :

HEADLINE
POST URL
IMAGE URL

This plugin will import a directory of files as either pages or posts, according to configurable settings.
If importing pages, the directory hierarchy will be preserved. Directories containing the specified file types will be imported as empty parent pages. Directories that do not contain the specified file types will be ignored.

As files are imported, the resulting IDs, permalinks, and titles will be displayed. On completion, the importer will provide a list of Apache redirects that can be used in your .htaccess file to seamlessly transfer visitors from the old file locations to the new WordPress posts or pages.

Options:

* import pages or posts
* specify content and title as HTML tags or Dreamweaver template regions
* remove a common phrase (such as the site name) from imported titles
* specify file extensions to import (e.g. html, htm, php)
* specify directories to exclude (e.g. images, css)
* if importing pages, specify whether your top-level files should become top-level pages or children of an existing page
* choose status, author, and timestamp
* use meta descriptions as excerpts

Requires PHP 5.

The amr-users plugin allows an administrator to design their own users lists or reports. It offers a basic set of lists to start with to get you going and almost unlimited ability to dig deep into user meta values and generate focused tailored listings.

Features:

each list is highly configurable

add more listings

users listings by almost all meta keys and values,

offers comment count and post count by author within the listings,

includes display, inclusion, exclusion, sorting configuration

export to CSV .

If you are attempting to integrate multiple plugins for your membership site, then this may be the tool for you. If those plugins store data in the user meta table, this plugin will access it (whether it is an array or an object) and convert the keys to more accessible data as though they were straight meta values.

Download

Tweetbacks Helper is a helper Plugin for Tweetbacks Plugin to help it detect more tweets. Tweetbacks is a great Plugin by Yoast which can be used to retrieve tweets about your blog posts from Twitter and import them as comments in your WordPress blog.

Features

The following are the major features of Tweetbacks Helper Plugin.

It can replace the Pseudo cron scheduler by Tweetbacks and with its own scheduler. This scheduler which can be invoked by pinging a url, fetches posts in the batch of 50 and tries to retrieve tweets for them. This way the twitter API is not misused and at the same time server load is also reduced.

The following screenshot shows the settings page in the admin console.

This Plugin also lists the short urls detected by Tweetbacks and allows you to add your own short urls if you are using your own url shortening service. See the following screenshot where the short urls are listed in the write post page.

Translation

The .pot file is available with the Plugin. If you are willing to do translation for the Plugin, use the .pot file to create the .po files for your language and let me know. I will add it to the Plugin after giving credit to you.

Links

The Plugin is available on the WordPress Plugin directory. Support is available at Plugin’s home page or at the author’s original announcing post.

Offering direct control over more than 100 separate on-page characteristics important for SEO, while loading only around 600 lines of code for each ordinary page view and playing nicely with other plugins, this plugin has been designed from the ground up for performance and compatibility. (By contrast, the most popular SEO plugin configures only around 20 characteristics, demands more than 2000 lines of code for each page view, and employs crude output buffer hacks which can sap performance and trample on many other plugins.)

This plugin is intended for anyone who wants to help search engines find their material: it’s not just for professional marketers, it’s not just for those who make their living via the web, and it’s certainly not only for developers or full-time settings tweakers.

Should You Even Use an SEO Plugin?

It’s no secret that for years, most SEO professionals have recommended against plugins for any kind of serious WordPress SEO. While fine for ‘casual’ use, up until now plugins have been unable to compete with bespoke program logic and extensive manual theme integration for flexibility, completeness, performance and scalability.

Greg’s High Performance SEO now offers to everyone the kinds of benefits previously available only to those willing to invest in expensive bespoke coding and extensively hand modified themes.

The plugin will help you to leverage the built-in capabilities of WordPress — which is already a semi-decent SEO platform right out the box — by taking important content and meta-content that would otherwise not be included on the page and making it visible and useful to humans and machines alike. This is not automatic: it will take a little effort on your part. (Genuine SEO is never automatic.) But this plugin is designed to provide a sufficiently rich palette of tools that optimizing your site as it grows can become second nature to you.

To help with that, in addition to extensive inline explanations for each of its over 100 separate settings, Greg’s High Performance SEO also includes a detailed 5000-word usage guide and introduction to WordPress SEO. So you’ll never be left in the dark as to what on Earth a particular setting should or could be used for.

What Can You Do With Greg’s High Performance SEO Plugin?

This plugin enables you to configure several important SEO characteristics in each of these five areas:

Main title

Head section: description, keywords, robots indexing and following instructions

Secondary title, visible in the page body

Secondary description, visible in the page body

Paged comments and duplicate content

(Greg’s High Performance SEO focuses exhaustively and exclusively on genuine SEO characteristics, so if you want something to fix the coffee or insert your ad code, you’ll need a different plugin for that.)
The full set of SEO characteristics can be configured for each of the following types of output:

Home page

Posts

Pages

Paged comments

Tag archives (including support for the tag descriptions introduced in WordPress 2.8)

Author archives

Category archives

Search results

404 page (irrelevant to SEO but helpful to site visitors)

The plugin provides configurable additions for the Post and Page writing and editing screens, as well as for the Dashboard’s QuickPress feature. All writing and editing additions can be restricted so that only contributors authorized to publish posts can use them.

Automatic Conflict Checker

A built-in conflict checker will let you know if it detects that other plugins may be interfering with your SEO preferences.

Support for Legacy SEO Plugins

Greg’s High Performance SEO also provides built-in support for titles and keywords left behind by alternative SEO and other legacy plugins such as:

All in One SEO Pack

Autometa

HeadMeta

Headspace

Platinum SEO

SEO Title Tags

WordPress itself seamlessly imports legacy data from several plugins, providing automatic support for the following additional plugins:

Jerome’s Keywords

Simple Tagging

Ultimate Tag Warrior

Sustainable Plugin Development

This plugin also demonstrates the new Sustainable Plugins Sponsorship Network, which aims to connect plugin developers with sponsors eager to support their creative efforts. You can easily switch off any sponsorship messages with a quick visit to the ‘Contribute’ page of your SEO settings; please see the ‘Instructions’ page for full details.

Learn More — And Get the Plugin!

Ever wanted to display a widget only on the front page? Subpages of certain pages? Posts with a certain tag? We’ve got you covered. With an extremely easy to use interface, you can create your section-specific widget in no time – without going through the frustration of writing PHP code (ala Widget Logic).

Easy to use widget interface

Selecting individual pages

Selecting categories

In addition to plain text and HTML, we have added shortcodes support into the mix. This means you can easily turn your crazy widget ideas into reality. Need a RSS widget for the posts in the “Movies” category? Yep, there is a shortcode for that. Show your AdSense ads only on the front page? There is a shortcode for that too – not to mention tag clouds, Paypal, Amazon… you name it. Or throw more CMS hotness into your sidebar with our conditional custom fields shortcodes. Checkout the screenshots for more inspirations.

Go wild with our conditional custom fields shortcodes

But before you hit the download button, we have saved a surprise for you. In order to help you fit all those insane ideas into your already crowded sidebar, we have decided to add tabs to the equation. With an intuitive drag-and-drop interface, creating your own tabbed widget is completely effortless – even for your grandparents. (See the screenshots for details.) To bring this to the next level, we have bundled 25 (!) switchable themes (powered by the jQuery UI project) with the plugin – and we even included a live preview in the settings page! And of course, you can always roll your own theme to suit the design of your site. (A lite version with the 2 basic themes is also available here.)

Creating tabs is fun – you can even drag-and-drop to reorder them

How it looks on an actual page

Switching themes – with live preview!

With all those awesome features, you should definitely download it and try it out. If you still cannot find a need for this, you’re probably using WordPress the wrong way Let us know what you think, drop us a comment - we would love to hear about your creative ways of using this plugin!

Some more inspirations for you:

Giving your confused visitors a helping hand

Save space by combining your navigations (Tag cloud and Category list powered by Template Tag Shortcode, pages list by our own Subpages Navigation plugin – coming soon!)

Built-in Conditionals

In this version, you can freely mix and match these predefined rules which gives you control of where the widget should be displayed:

Everywhere on your site (new)

The front page

All posts

All author pages

All or selected pages and subpages

Pages or posts with comments enabled

Pages or posts belongs to selected categories

Pages or posts with selected tags

All (new) or selected category archive pages

All (new) or selected tags archive pages

All date-based archive pages

Search results page (new)

“404″ not found page (new)

“Amr personalise” allows one to personalise wordpress emails, or content for a logged in user. It offers shortcode type functionality in any email template or page or post. It extracts the user data of the logged in viewer or email address. A default text can be specified for situations where there are no stored name details ie not logged in, or no names provided – (eg: with the plugin subscribe2. )

The idea came about when developing a membership website that used subscribe2 and “your members”.

Usage:

[user] will look first for user short name, then display name, or nick name, or username, or a default specified (eg: Reader) if nothing else can be used
[user user_email] will replace the text with the email address if logged in etc

It also allows you to customise the sender email address that wordpress uses to send the emails, as well as the sender name.

Future releases hope to allow one to personalise with more user fields, included those buried in meta data objects. This may be useful in membership sites where one may want to reflect data such as expiry dates and membership types currently stored as objects in the user meta data.

I’ll make this short and sweet. Widget Block is a plugin that allows you to create new types of widgets, called Blocks. If you’re familiar with Drupal, the plugin lets you treat widgets much like Drupal Blocks.

With this plugin, you can create widgets that only display on the pages you want, without needing to create many different widget regions.

All you do is enter a list of pages to include or exclude. You can use wildcards to match a certain series of posts or pages. The Widget Block plugin even supports PHP code. The plugin is meant to be simple, and I hope it saves users from having to create region after region. Hopefully something similar will make it into WordPress core.

Usage: Once you activate the plugin, go into Appearance > Widgets. You’ll see a new “Block” item under “Available Widgets”. Drag this item into the region of your choice. That’s it!

Examples

<front> will show the widget on the frontpage.

about will show the widget on the About page.

pluginblog/2009/* will show the widget on any of this site’s blog posts from 2009.

pluginblog/2009/07/* will show the widget on any of this site’s blog posts from July of 2009.

If you manage a multi-user blog on WordPress, you might feel that you need a simple way for inter-user communication. I created the Acts as Group plugin for this very reason.

Acts as Group allows you to create user-groups for any purpose. For example, you can create a “Baseball Fan Group” for users who like baseball. In addition, the plugin provides a Twitter-like messaging interface for groups on the WordPress Administration Panel. Only group members can see the messages. The plugin provides your own “private twitter” for every group you join.

Acts as Group also provides sidebar widget. When you are logged in, you can see the latest messages on your groups, outside the Administration Panel.

Download | Plugin Homepage | Support Forum

Who should use the Acts as Group plugin?

Acts as Group is designed to help people who participate in multi-user blogging or group blogging. If you are seeking a simple way to communicate among members and don’t want an overly complicated solution, Acts as Group is your best choice.

Is this a Twitter client? Does it require a Twitter account to use?

No. Acts as Group is not a Twitter client and you don’t need a Twitter account to use it. Only a user account on the WordPress blog is needed.

Who can see the group messages?

Only group members can see the group messages. Its interface is closed so that your privacy is securely protected.

We use P2. Should we switch to Acts as Group?

You don’t have to switch, but if you desire a more closed way of communication, Acts as Group would be a good option to try.

Does this support WordPress MU?

Yes, of course.

The WP-Announcements plugin is ideal for websites or blogs that would like to display a site wide announcement, featured post, important message, community notice, advertisement, survey form, email subscription form, emergency alert or anything you can publish in a post as a marquee or popup window using ShadowBox-JS or ThickBox.

WP-Announcements provides two announcement options:

A customizable marquee that displays an assigned post title linked to that actual post. The marquee can be displayed by calling the php function wp_announce_marquee() anywhere in your theme, using the WP-Announce-Marquee Widget or using the Shortcode [wp_announce_marquee] anywhere in your post or page content.

A popup window using ShadowBox-JS or ThickBox that displays the title and content of an assigned announcement post. The popup will only show up once for each website visitor per active popup post as a cookie is created. You can also set a popup window for each time a website member logs into the admin dashboard.

WP-Announcements activates checkboxes on the add/edit post page to allow easy assignment of announcement posts. An admin page under the settings tab is also included to toggle announcements on or off and to manage all posts saved as announcements for easy retrieval and reuse of reoccurring announcements in the future.

Works with WordPress and WordPress MU 2.8.2

Visit the WP-Announcements homepage or download it from WordPress.org.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn’t any of this plugins functionality working?

You likely have Javascript disabled or you are using a browser that doesn’t support Javascript. This plugin requires Javascript to function.

Why do I not have Ajax Delete or Ajax Upgrade links?

In order for these links to show up WordPress has to determine if PHP can perform the necessary file system level tasks without prompting for FTP or SSH/SFTP login information. See Editing wp-config.php and Using SSH to Install/Upgrade for information on configuring WordPress to not prompt you for this information.

Why can’t I use the Ajax functions on the Ajax Plugin Helper itself?

Using the Ajax Plugin Helper to perform the functions provided by the plugin would cause several things to break since it would become deactivated before it could perform all of its required functions. Because of this you will not have Ajax links added to the Ajax Plugin Helper plugin.

Does this plugin work with WordPress Mu?

Yes. Just place it in
wp-content/plugins
. Please note that it does not yet add an Ajax Activate Site Wide link yet. The Activate Site Wide links will just operate just as it did before.

Adds an SEO friendly, accessible regular or dropdown menu to your WordPress powered site. To see a live demo of the plugin in action, please visit our demo site.

Demonstration of the PixoPoint Menu plugin in action. This example demonstrates a dropdown menu with a graphical shadow.

Restyling your menu

Unlike other menu plugins for WordPress, this one allows you to totally restyle your menu to look however you want, but you never need to touch a line of code to do it. You can totally restyle your menu and rearrange the menu contents all within your WordPress installation via an easy to use interface.

The editing panel used to restyle the design of your menu. You can change colours, text sizes, boldness, italics, use graphics or even add a smooth shadow effect to dropdown menus all from the easy to use interface.

The editor system operates from your own site, but behind the scenes it sends your design preferences back to the PixoPoint server for processing. The required CSS data is then sent back to your WordPress install for it to be used in your menu. When you save your design, that CSS is saved into your WordPress database. The plugin only needs to access the PixoPoint server if you choose to modify the design in the future.

Arranging menu items

You can choose from a selection of different menu items to include in your menu, from Pages to Categories, Blog posts or even a search box can all be added to your menu via an easy to use drag and drop interface in the plugins admin page. For those of you looking for the ultimate control, you can even choose one of the custom code boxes to insert whatever HTML code you wish. For those using the Pages option, you can rearrange your WordPress Pages via another simple drag and drop interface under the ‘Advanced’ tab in the plugins admin page.

Drag and drop interface for modifying the menu contents of the PixoPoint Menu plugin.

Installation

Upload the complete pixopoint-menu folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory OR install it via the WordPress plugin repository browser

1. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
2. Either: Add <?php if(function_exists(‘pixopoint_menu’)) {pixopoint_menu();} ?> to your theme wherever you want the menu to appear (usually your header.php file) or choose the ‘Auto theme support’ option in the plugins admin panel (works with Hybrid, Thematic, Thesis and many other popular WordPress themes).
3. Visit the “PixoPoint Menu” page in your WordPress settings menu and control how the menu behaves via the plethora of different options
4. Click the ‘Load editor’ button in the plugins admin page to modify the design via the easy to use editing panel

Support

If you follow all of the instructions here and if followed all of the instructions in the plugin and on the installation page then please post a question in our support forum.

The most creative name WordPress Dashboard Twitter in fact represents a Dashboard Widget for WordPress, that turns your Dashboard into a Twitter Client.

Twitter is everywhere. So why not in your WordPress Dashboard? There are lots of Twitter plugins for WordPress around, so why another one? Let’s answer this by listing the main features:

Adds a Twitter Client to your WordPress Dashboard only

Display Mentions, Direct Messages, Sent messages and Favorites in a tabbed interface

Reply to a Twitter status or Direct Message from within the Dashboard Widget

No dedicated page in your WordPress admin panel

All customization can be done through the Widget’s Configuration

No impact on your blog’s frontend or other backend pages

Shortening URLs with wp.gd (new!) or tr.im

One-Click-Image-Upload for TwitPic

Whenever you check your incoming links or WordPress News in the Dashboard, you can check your Twitter Status as well

To point that out once again: WordPress Dashboard Twitter does not post your new blog entries to Twitter, it does not display your tweets in your blog’s frontend and it does not add a “Twitter This” button below your posts. WordPress Dashboard Twitter is made for those who want to stay up-to-date with their twitter account quick and easily when they login to their WordPress Dashboard. It was made for that one purpose only.
If you’d like to have more, go for those other great plugins like Tweetable, which entered the contest as well. (Good luck, btw!)

Introducing a new URL shortening service – wp.gd:

WordPress Dashboard Twitter comes with its own URL Shortener Service wp.gd! It’s not public, but you can use it in WordPress Dashboard Twitter as much as you like. If – for whatever reason – you don’t like wp.gd, just switch to tr.im in the options.

Video:

Introducing WordPress Dashboard Twitter on Vimeo.

Coming soon:

Hashtag filtering & search

Viewing timeline

User-based Twitter accounts (a.k.a. every backend user can use his own twitter account)

Create favorites from within the Dashboard Widget

Block users from within the Dashboard Widget

Download, Support & more

The plugin can be downloaded here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-dashboard-twitter/ Support is given via the official plugin homepage (email only at the moment) or the wp.org support forums.

Description

The simple to use One-Time Password plugin enables you to login to your WordPress weblog using passwords which are valid for one session only. One-time passwords prevent stealing of your main WordPress password in less trustworthy environments, like internet cafés, for example by keyloggers. For each login you can choose between using your main password or a one-time password. The one-time password system conforms to RFC 2289 of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

Version 2.0 of this plugin has a new option to protect administrative actions by one-time passwords. This option is disabled by default and only available when you logged-in with a one-time password. It is possible to define exceptions. The default exceptions are viewing the dashboard, adding a post (but not saving it) and logging out.

Support

If the usage instructions and frequently asked questions don’t help, you can write a comment on the plugin home page.

Easy ReTweet is a WordPress Plugin, which let’s you add retweet or Tweet this buttons for your WordPress posts, together with the retweet count.

Easy ReTweet uses easy retweet JavaScript library created by John Resig and is based on Bit.ly JavaScript API.

Plugin Usage

You can download the Plugin from the Plugin’s home page. There are three ways you can add the retweet button, the automatic way, manual way and using shortcodes.

Automatic way

Install the Plugin and choose the type and position of the button from the Plugin’s settings page.

Manual way

If you want more control over the way the button should be positioned, then you can manually call the button using the following code.

if (function_exists('easy_retweet_button')) echo easy_retweet_button();

Using Shortcodes

You can also place the shortcode
[easy-retweet]
anywhere in your post. This shortcode will be replaced by the button when the post is rendered.

Your feedback’s are welcome!
