Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress, turned 28 two weeks ago. It’s been a busy year for Matt. Three major WordPress versions were released, he switched back to using a Mac after 8 years on Windows, and he travelled 190,000 miles over 245 days. Even though two weeks have gone by, it’s not too late to say “happy birthday” to Matt. In fact, he would prefer to receive all of his birthday gifts this year in the form of donations to Charity: Water through his birthday campaign. Matt has set an ambitious goal to reach $28,000 in donations by April, but if that goal is reached, his “birthday presents” will have provided clean water for 280 families in developing countries. Not everyone can head to the nearest faucet for a clean glass of water, so say “happy birthday” to Matt and help someone else enjoy some clean water today!

Stick around the WordPress community for a period of time and you’re bound to come across a few folks who say Automattic is an evil company or Matt Mullenweg is evil in the way in which he runs WordPress.org. The more time I spend talking to Matt and with other employees of Automattic, the more I don’t understand where these thoughts and feelings of evilness come from. Sure, there is a decision made from time to time that a vocal group of people disagree with but you can’t make the right decision 100% of the time. Let’s take a closer look at Automattic as it relates to WordPress. When I interviewed Matt at WordCamp New York, one of the things I asked him to address is the notion that Automattic commercially benefits from those who work for free. This indeed happens but on the flip side, Automattic gives a ton […]

Yahoo Spins Off Blo.gs To Automattic: WordPress parent company Automattic has bought the blo.gs pinging and blog trackback service from Yahoo. Sounds like a good deal for everyone involved, including Yahoo’s recent attempts at tearing down their “Wall of Shame” of failed products. Matt has more details and so does Toni.

This might be the last WordCamp Dallas 2008 post you see on this blog and since that is the case, better to go out with a bang! In case you were one of the unlucky ones who didn’t have a chance to attend the conference live, the good news is that there were plenty of attendees blogging, vlogging, and live blogging the event. I present to you a list of links which will correspond to the conference schedule. Matt Mullenweg discussing WordPress 2.5 and beyond. Actually, he announced the redesign of WordPress.org along with the release of 2.5. John Pozadzides presented his 45 ways to power up your blog. After Lunch, Jonathan Bailey gave us the lowdown on content theft and protection along with a number of other things that bloggers of any platform would be interested in. Jonathan has also published the slides for his presentation on his own […]

Why Polaris is Backing Automattic: Mike Hirshland from Polaris explains their rationale for providing a “relatively small” bit of funding for Automattic. A friend of mine from Wooster, another Matt, had a very catchy DJ handle (radio, yes I was a DJ at Wooster) which I believe appropriately describes Mike’s depiction of Matt. Henceforth Matt will be referred to as WonderBoi.
