Back on January 22nd, Google notified its Blogger users that effective March 26th, support for publishing via FTP would be discontinued. This announcement prompted at least one individual who relied on this feature to switch from Blogger to WordPress. However, the journey from one platform to another presented some obstacles. Kent Newsome has published a six part series that describes the trials and tribulations of the move including export/import, file size limitations, retaining the URL structure, theme hacking, and more. Congrats to Kent for having a successful move and welcome to the WordPress community.

FTC says bloggers must disclose payments and freebies when reviewing products or risk being fined $16,000: This morning, the Federal Trade Commission published their Final Guides Governing Endorsements, Testimonials with changes that affect testimonial advertising, bloggers and celebrity endorsements. Though these are guidelines and not regulations, bloggers could face civil fines up to $16,000 and advertisers could also face fines.

Interesting to note is that there are no guidelines on how to disclose relationships and this has no effect on blogs, corporations and relationships outside of the US. The new rules would apply to any transfer of value in exchange for publicity but seems very watered down in its execution. TechMeme is full of reverberations, but is there a lot to worry about for the everyday blogger?

My question is, have you ever received money or gifts for your posts? Have you been offered products in exchange for writing reviews? I know I have received many offers for products and services but I have turned them all down because of what is important to me. I feel that a “good review” in exchange for a handout or promise of other items of value, rather cheapens the reason for me to blog. Have you received anything through your blog that worries you?

As in last year, following our own Plugin Competition (results are on the way), WPMU.org is holding their own plugin competition. But this time they are adding BuddyPress plugins into the mix as well. You can visit the WPMU Plugin Competition Homepage for more information.

The rules for the competition remain the same as last year. Competitors need to post as announcement for their plugin(s) by registering at WPMU.org and submitting a post. The plugins must relate to WordPress MU or BuddyPress and be available freely for download. The plugins must also be released under a GPL compatible license. The prize pool is at $1000 and the organizers are looking for more donations to bolster the purse.

So if you are a novice plugin author looking to wade in the WordPress MU pool or a seasoned veteran looking to flex your muscles, head over to the competition and post an entry!

Disclosure: WPMU.org are past and present advertisers on this blog and have donated prizes to our own WordPress Plugin Competition.

Old WordPress Versions Under Attack: Older version of WordPress are being attacked and characters are being added to the permalinks. Sure signs of the attack include strange characters in your permalinks (single posts do not work) and an extra administrator account in the users control panel which you cannot see. Look for the administrator count in brackets at the top. Is the number there what you would expect on your blog?

Please upgrade your WordPress blog to the latest version ASAP. Our own PluginBlog was vulnerable and was compromised (shame on me for not having upgraded from a really old version). Our blog had registration turned off.

After upgrading your blog and changing your password to a strong one, you can visit Lorelle’s post to find more ways to secure your install and remove the extra admin account that might have been created as part of the attack.

I removed the extra administrator account through phpMyAdmin and it was the last account created. You could also find the last account created and if it does not look familiar, could delete it and see if the number of Administrators in the user control panel is reduced to the original amount you expect to see.

21 Great Plugins to Manage Multi-Author Blogs Efficiently: This is an interesting collection of plugins to manage multi-author blogs and add extra visibility to your co-authors. Weblog Tools Collection is a multi-author blog that is put together by highly dedicated and talented authors in various parts of the planet. We collect and put together news, information and articles throughout a 24 hour period and are probably watching over the blog and the comments in one way or another. We rarely ever meet face to face and tend to communicate via IM, email and a very rare phone call from time to time.

Some of the plugins mentioned in this list are popular such as Role Manager, which is very useful in and of itself. However, there are others that sparked immediate interest in my. The ability to add co-authors to a post would be quite cool, as would the ability to add quick information about the particular author to the various posts. Many of the larger multi-author blogs such as Mashable and TechCrunch already do this (I am not sure how, but I assume there are some custom plugins involved) and now you can do the same.

Speaking of multiple authors, are you a passionate plugin picker and a theme tamer? If you are not afraid to speak to thousands of people in an instant, have confidence in your writing abilities and are interested in breaking into the blogging world with aplomb, we would like to hear from you. Tell us what you will do to make this blog better using the Contact form above.

The inclusion of useful development tools such as Firefox extensions and even links to free text editors are appreciated. The one inclusion that I would have expected from the blog of a theme framework developer would have been a list of theme frameworks that a beginner could get started with.

UPDATE: As from the comments below and various emails I have received, this might be an isolated issue related to my combination of code and plugins. Many people continue to use Feedburner Feed Replacement without any issues.

If you have been using the Feedburner Feed Replacement Plugin originally from Steve Smith, and have not checked your feeds lately, it might be worth a few minutes of your time to do so. Just browse to your blog’s feed address (http://yourblog.com/feed/) and if you are redirected to your Feedburner feed, you are fine. Otherwise you need to uninstall the Feedburner plugin and get something else.

About a month ago, this blog’s feed count lost about 5000 readers in one feel swoop which is a huge number and a rude wake up call for us. This has happened before with Feedburner and I thought the count would go back up once Feedburner straightened out their data. But alas, that was not to be. I was relegated to thinking that either our posts have reduced so much in quality that people are unsubscribing in droves or there is some errant code on this blog somewhere. Even before this occurred, we had started putting more effort and resources into writing better articles and publishing more useful news for you. So I started trimming the fat (I had a bunch of stats javascripts and the like which are now gone, a good result of this exercise) and looking through plugins. Little did it occur to me that the Feedburner plugin might be the culprit.

In all honesty, I have not had the chance to figure out why the plugin stopped working but I did some research on the web and no-one seems to have noticed the problem. It might be an isolated case where my configurations or combination of plugins on this blog is causing the issue but I highly doubt it. The Feedburner plugin page says that the plugin works with WordPress 2.5 and below. I replaced that plugin with the one from John Watson and everything seems to be working fine again. The feed counts might not go up right away (we are putting more effort and resources into writing better articles and publishing more useful news for you) but I feel better knowing that everything is kosher on the feed side.

Do you use the Feedburner Feed Replacement Plugin? Was feed broken? What other Feedburner plugins do you use and like?

Jeff and I have been having some interesting discussions surrounding the WordPress Codex and WordPress documentation. In case you were not aware, there is some fantastic volunteering work going on in WordPress documentation. We would like to see more people involved in the use of and help with the Codex and have some ideas up our sleeves towards that end. However, I think we also need to know what we are dealing with and would like some input from our readers.

I see two different audiences of the Codex and thus the two separate polls. Comments are also appreciated. Let us know if you want to help with the Codex or if you would like to help with WordPress documentation.

WordPress 2.8.1 is now available for download or upgrade according to the WordPress Development Blog. This release includes a bunch of bug fixes and security updates, including an important one that affects a few plugins (details here). The update highlights are listed on the dev blog post and all the changes since 2.8 are on the Trac. I don’t see the upgrade bar on this blog yet, but it should be soon. Since 2.8.1 is now released, I wish Dev4Press would redo their benchmarks.
