You can also receive updates from this blog via email.

So we had a really good time and wished that all of you were there. The presentations were all top notch and audience participation was very good. In his keynote Matt mentioned that attendees would get the most from this conference if they mingled and connected with each other as much as they paid attention to the people up on stage and I noticed a lot of mingling going on. :) It was wonderful to finally meet a whole bunch of people. I have all the pictures that I took (I should have taken the D70) on my Flickr account with the agreed upon WordCampDallas2008 tag. If you have any questions, have any media from the event that you would like to share or have any questions for any of the events/presenters, please let us know.

Special thanks to Charles for organizing the event and to John for being a terrific host.

Content suggestion engine for WordPress 26comments

Content suggestion engine for WordPress: TechCrunch has an interesting article this morning on the Alpha release of a product called Zemanta. Zemanta is a contextual content suggestion engine and works with WordPress and Firefox. With nothing to install on the blog, and a simple FF extension, Zemanta creates a little AJAX box on the side of your write panel in WordPress with suggestions on what to add to your content. This information is gathered real time from various media publication sites and blogs. I am watching the Zemanta control box as I type this post and it seems to update after regular intervals with new suggestions. It also lets you add links to various keywords on your post to other articles on the web and your blog.

I just tried out some of the features including addition of pictures and related links but the soup generated is not pretty and I personally do not care for it. But it is still Alpha code but it sure is fun to play with and discover related and relevant content to display to your readers. If you are a WordPress (or Blogger) user, give it a try and let us know what you think.

20 Themes To Choose From 5comments

For most of you, WeblogToolsCollection.com has become your number one source for new WordPress theme releases. Since Keith introduced the small thumbnail previews and demo links, theme posts seem to be better liked by our audience. I appreciate Keith’s attention to detail and look forward to his regular theme and plugin posts.

Smashing Magazine has published an article which highlights at least 20 free WordPress themes to choose from. Some of these themes look as if they could almost be considered premium but they are still free. My personal favorite is 5ThirtyOne while Probama comes in second. Although I’m a little bummed that the article didn’t feature Justin Tadlocks Options theme. I feel that it would have been a nice addition to the post.

At any rate, make sure you read each themes license agreement as they can vary from theme to theme. This is especially true when it comes to using the theme in a commercial environment.

The Twenty-Five Most Valuable Blogs 11comments

The Twenty-Five Most Valuable Blogs: At first I thought this was linkbait but a read through the article and the other content on the blog changed my mind. There is some analysis of each blog/blogging company with details about the company, guesses on revenues and page views, future prospects, operating margins and employees, advertising statistics and finally a comment on property valuation as multiples of revenue or multiples of operating profits. From my quick glance I would say that the revenue numbers are not perfectly on the money but since these figures are almost never publicly discussed (except on make money online blogs) I guess there is some error built into the valuation. Daniel’s excellent Daily Blog Tips($1.8M) makes it into the list at number 18. The Gawker properties tops the list at a value of $150 million and other big names include TechCrunch($36M), Mashable($10M), GigaOm($8.4M) and RWW($5M).

A few things surprised me about the entry. I try to keep a very short list of reads and trim and add to them all the time. The fact that the top twenty blogs were on my reading list was a strange surprise. Another surprise was that there was not a single link on the original linked post. (Not one link. I wonder if that was done by choice since their other articles contain links.) I was also surprised by the detailed reasoning for the valuations and the stream of numbers that were presented. Considering that the blog in question is on Wall Street and finance, I should not be surprised but I am not used to seeing this level of financial proficiency on blog valuations.

All in all it was a pleasure to read and compare.

10 Plugins To Combat Comment Spam 46comments

Author: Jeff Chandler Category: Wordpress Plugins

When I recently wrote a post which pointed to an article that described a few things you should do with your WordPress blog immediately after having it installed, I noticed Collin made a comment in that, WordPress was like the Windows OS where as, it comes bundled with Internet Explorer for a browser while WordPress comes bundled with (albeit fantastic) Akismet for a comment spam blocker.

With that in mind, here are 9 plugins that you can use either as stand alone replacements or in various combinations to combat comment spam. Not all plugins work nicely with others so be sure to read the installation manual if you decide to use any of these plugins on your own blog.

1. Comments For Cookies - This plugin adds a stylesheet to your blog’s html source code. When a browser loads that stylesheet a cookie is dropped. If that user then leaves a comment the cookie is checked. If it doesn’t exist the comment is marked as spam.

2. Bad Behavior - Bad Behavior is an awesome comment spam blocking plugin. If you can imagine, Bad Behavior is like Akismet on steroids. BH is a plugin which contains a series of scripts which block comment spam, trackback spam, guestbook spam, wiki spam, and even protects your site from some malicious website hacking. It’s been rumored that Akismet combined with Bad Behavior is the ultimate anti spam configuration in WordPress.

3. WP-SpamFree - SpamFree takes a somewhat different approach at combating spam by using a combination of JavaScript and cookies. According to the plugin author, most automated bots are stopped dead in their tracks by using this method while normal web site visitors are unaffected. However, the plugin author does state that there may be a few visitors who have JS and cookies disabled who might be annoyed by this plugin but that those people would be far fewer than the 100% of people which would be annoyed by CAPTCHA’s, challenge questions and other validation methods.

4. Spam Karma 2 - SK2 is the successor to SpamKarma. SpamKarma2 developed in 2007 is a an anti spam plugin which contains a wide assortment of options with the ability to find tune it’s effectiveness. SK2 even comes with it’s own module system where you can download separate modules and add functionality to the original plugin if the default is not enough for you. Despite this plugins age, WordPressers are still chanting about how well this plugin works.

5. Comment Inbox - Developed by Mark Jaquith, Comment Inbox gives you the ease of the moderation queue with the freedom of unmoderated comments. Comment Inbox works by placing all comments except caught spam into moderation which is renamed to Comment Inbox. All comments in the Comment Inbox will show up immediately on your blog so conversations don’t become interrupted by moderation time lines. An effective way of dealing with both spam and bacn on your blog.

6. CAPTCHA-Godfather - This plugin offers four different methods of protectio. The first is a verification code which is always generated dynamically. The second is that each verification code is given a session id which is different from the PHPSESSID value. The third protection is that every session id and verification code gets their own time stamp. The time stamp works on the premise that humans need a few seconds or minutes to post a comment. The last protection involved IP addresses. The visitor’s IP is stored with the verification code and only when the comment contains the original IP it’s then saved and held for moderation.

7. Defensio Anti-Spam - This plugin is used by a number of WordPress bloggers. It works similarly in the same way as Akismet as it is an advanced, spam filtering service that learns and adapts to your behaviors and those of your readers. Defensio also includes support for OpenID, detailed statistics and more. With all of this functionality under the hood, it’s no wonder that this is one of the most popular anti spam plugins in use today, outside of Akismet.

8. Worst Offenders - Worst Offenders is a plugin that you can use to help decrease the amount of time you spend looking through messages to determine if they are spam or not. Worst Offenders analyzies messages already marked as spam and then uses several techniques to identify messages with common sources, subjects, and content. The messages marked as Worst Offenders can then be deleted all at once, leaving only a handful of messages to sift through.

9. WP Captcha-Free - WP Captcha-Free blocks automated comment spam without resorting to CAPTCHAs. It does so by validating a hash based on time (and some other parameters) using AJAX when the form is posted. Comments posted via automated means will not have a hash or will have an expired hash and will be rejected. Unlike using a captcha, this does not place any burden on the commenter.

10. Akismet - There is no way in which I am going to write about spam blocking plugins and not include Akismet. Current versions of WordPress come with Akismet installed by default. Akismet uses a unique algorithm combined with a community-created database to “learn” which comments are comment spam and which are legitimate.

The default configuration for Akismet may not be enough for some. In my own experience, I’ve noticed that by check marking the configuration option to allow Akismet to automatically discard spam comments on posts that are older than a month has dramatically lowered the amount of spam in my moderation queue.

As for myself, I am perfectly content with the performance I have received out of Akismet. However, I must note that some of the success tied into Akismet deals with the way I have configured commenting in general on my own personal blog. For example, for a comment to appear on my blog, a user must fill out the name and email text fields. They must also contain a previously approved comment. I have also configured my comment moderation settings to place comments in the moderation queue if they contain two or more links.

Everyone’s comment spam/configuration circumstances are different, so be sure to experiment with different options or techniques to figure out which comment spam blocking recipe works for you. If you would like even more information on how to combat comment spam, check out this article on the Codex.

2.3 to 2.5 Database Changes 49comments

Author: Jeff Chandler Category: WordPress

I’ve seen a number of people tell others that WordPress 2.5 will have little to no database schema changes. It looks like that is no longer the case as MichaelH has pointed out.

Changes to database schema from Version 2.3 to 2.5.

*Table: comments

  • Changed ‘comment_approved’ to varchar(20) NOT NULL default ‘1′
  • Added KEY ‘comment_approved_date_gmt’ (comment_approved, comment_date_gmt)
  • Added KEY ‘comment_date_gmt’ (comment_date_gmt)

*Table: links

  • Changed ‘link_visible’ to varchar(20) NOT NULL default ‘Y’

*Table: options

  • Changed ‘autoload’ to varchar(20) NOT NULL default ‘yes’

*Table: posts

  • Changed ‘post_status’ to varchar(20) NOT NULL default ‘publish’
  • Changed ‘comment_status’ to varchar(20) NOT NULL default ‘open’
  • Changed ‘ping_status’ to varchar(20) NOT NULL default ‘open’

*Table: term_relationships

    Added ‘term_order’ int(11) NOT NULL default 0

Thanks to MichaelH for putting these changes together. This information is especially useful to plugin and theme authors as it lets them know if their particular project will break.

  • After WordPress Is Installed

Jason Blanton of BloggingTips has put together a nice little article which covers five things you should do after you install your self hosted WordPress blog. These five things include:
    1. Changing the permalink structure
    2. Change the default theme
    3. Update your ping services
    4. Activate the akismet plugin
    5. Burn your feed with FeedBurner
One item that I would add to this list is to figure out which stats program or service to use. You can use WordPress.com Stats which is a detailed stats plugin or you can use something like Google Analytics or MINT. One thing that I wish I could do if I could start over would be to integrate one of these nice statistical packages as they really come in handy down the road. Jason mentions that this is only the first in a series of articles which will cover various things that you might want to tweak as you go along with using WordPress. Although this short and quick guide is great for newcomers to WordPress, what about those who have established blogs? If you could go back in time and change the way or ways in which you began to use WordPress, what would those changes be? (27)

Possibility Of A WordCamp UK 11comments

Author: Jeff Chandler Category: WordPress

Tony Scott has published an entry on his blog entitled WordCamp UK proposal. Inspired by WordCamp Dallas, Tony is looking at quite possibly holding the first ever WordCamp within the UK. His blog post will serve as a gauge of interest. So far, the topics of discussion regarding this event center around:

  • Format: A little more structured, such as WordCamp Dallas 2008, or more BarCamp, as WordCamp Hamburg?
  • Size: Number of attendees?
  • Location: London or other city? Take into account travelling and accommodation.
  • Sponsorship: Would be good to subsidize the event!

If you would like to participate in or help organize the event, be sure to stop by Tony’s blog and leave a comment.

WordPress 2.5 Object Cache Improvements 12comments

Author: Mark Ghosh Category: WordPress

WordPress 2.5 and the Object Cache: This comprehensive article by Neosmart discusses the caching changes that are going into place with WordPress 2.5. The article has very pertinent links, explains the use and application of the various types of object caches in WordPress and how they are being changed and improved in this new version. I will not steal Neosmart’s thunder by revealing much here, but if you are interested in understanding the nuances, history and best practices of caching in WordPress (primarily Object Caching), head over to the link above.

Worthy of mentioning however, is that I have never used any type of caching on this blog beside the occasional testing of code and plugins. I love the dynamic nature of the content that I help create and I cherish the highly dynamic nature of WordPress. That is one of the properties of this excellent tool that attracted me to it in the first place. Every site that refers you here, every post you click on, every page you visit, every link you follow, every comment you make, every post you rate and every search you perform is recorded and is used in some way to provide you with a better browsing and reading experience. Even the ads are displayed according to your visiting habits and your participation on this blog (and I have Ozh to thank for much of that code).

Where You Download a Theme Matters 39comments

Over the weekend, I caught a glimpse of what was supposedly a new design for the WordPress Themes Repository. As was explained by Steven Hodson, the screen shots were taken from his browser when he visited the theme repository. The screen shots showcase a carousel view for browsing through themes, icons for navigating and downloading themes, a single page view which displays detailed information regarding the theme ect. No matter how hard I and many others tried, we couldn’t get the theme repository to display in the same way that it did for Steve.

Lloyd Budd stopped by my blog post and left this as the comment:

Hi Jeff, those screen shots are fake. I’m 100% certain. I just checked and there isn’t any code, nor has there been, to produce that type of experience.

I’ve been subscribed to Steve’s blog for quite some time and he is not one to post fake images or fake content. I believe that one of two things happened. The first is that, this is quite possibly a fluke. I don’t know how I would explain it, except that it’s wrong. The second thing is that this could be a theme repository setup on a website to mimic the current repository albeit with a different way of browsing themes. After browsing the web for quite some time looking for themes, I have come across numerous sites which have a theme showcase which is nothing more than a different setup for the theme repository.

Then, a fellow WordPress blogger Mike sent me an article that was written by 5thirtyone which reminds users that you have to be careful where you download your WordPress themes from. I must of missed the boat back when this event took place, but there was an incident where themes that were hosted on the official theme repository were being hosted on 3rd-party theme galleries such as WP Sphere. These themes were the same with the exception that the themes that were being hosted on the 3rd-party theme gallery websites were riddled with malicious code/malware.

I think now would be a good time to remind current users, especially new ones of WordPress to only download themes from the author’s website or from the official WordPress Themes Repository. Please note that not every site hosting a WordPress theme is bad. However, downloading a theme that is outside of the authors website or the repository is a risk that may not be worth taking.

WordPress 2.5 RC1 Released 34comments

Author: Mark Ghosh Category: Blogging News, WordPress

WordPress Development Blog: 2.5 Sneak Peek  I love the staccato description Matt uses to start the post: A customizable dashboard, multi-file upload, built-in galleries, one-click plugin upgrades, tag management, built-in Gravatars, full text feeds, and faster load times sound interesting? The first Release Candidate for WordPress 2.5 is out for those that have been waiting patiently to try out the new features. Matt details out the updates and the new features of 2.5 on the development blog and the good news is spreading in the WordPress circles.

In addition to many underlying changes and updates to the code, the administration back end of WordPress gets a major rework in this version. The release candidate is not for everyone and can be downloaded for testing and bug searching.

If you make frequent backups and you’re interested in helping us out with development by testing the new code, download and install Release Candidate 1 of WordPress 2.5, and join our testers mailing list to report any bugs you find in the code.

We’re also interested in feedback on the new interface and would love to hear your opinions, thoughts, rants, raves, and anything in between. We created a special email address just for the occasion: 2.5-feedback@wordpress.org.
