I did the upgrade without deactivating my plugins. However, I advise making a backup of your blog first in case something does go wrong. It takes a lot of time to deactivate themand reactivate them. I believe wordpress developers should also focus in enabling a easier way to upgrade versions. It is a pity given that it is one of the best blog packages available. Also the page where it is displayed the plug-ins and widgets is really chaotic. I am also a Joomla user and to tell the truth Joomla makes your life easy to upgrade versions and to keep track of plug-ins (new and recently updated) Just some positive and constructive criticism.
