I "stumbled" across your blog and am trying to find answers to (what I believe to be) some pretty easy questions. My first question concerns uploading a customized template for Wordpress. Can you direct me to some "thorough" instructions/help? I am new to blogging and looking to make the most of it. Thanks!

I found this thread through a posting at newsforge.

I never intended to spark such a heated debate about the links in my themes. I've seen some other, even well-known, theme authors with more links in their templates than I. Nothing evil about that (of course, that's just my opinion). The license terms are up to the theme author, and theme users should respect that; that's pretty much all there is to it.

A number of my themes actually have one link pointing to the theme's page and a link point to my homepage - not all themes have an "advertising link". But, for anyone wishing to remove the links in a theme, they're welcome to contact me in order to work something out, use a different theme, or build their own theme (I've actually just released a new theme called Ultimate Diva Sandbox for this very purpose).

I agree with Michelle,
I don't think there's anything evil with putting links on a *freely* given away theme as long as it didn't go to gambling or drug websites.

Making themes does take a lot of time, making 31?? That's just insane.

I use both an attribution link and a sponsored link in my themes. But anyone who does not want the links can of course remove them. I appreciate when users choose to leave the link since it gives something back to me. But I would never force anyone to keep links if they don't want it, that is a bit rude...

I guess people still want to give away free things provided they gain some backlinks. It should be ok to me.....At least I did not have to pay for it.

Distributing non-GPL themes from a site with 'wordpress' in the domain name? Tsk tsk. I imagine the lawyers will be in touch shortly.

Well, if it is advertisement, then I wouldn't agree with that. I would never put an advertisement on my theme. Only a credit line, as I have.

But, then it is upto the author and the user.

Yeah, but one of the links is an advertising link. The license of the theme states that the link must remain in place, forcing you to have that link on your site if you use that theme. That's evil. It's the theme author's choice, but it's still evil.

I don't see any reason to have a problem with a link at the bottom of a theme. Giving credit where credit is due :)
