WP Theme: Simpla Phu has embarked on “A Theme a Day” week where he designs and offers for download a Wordpress theme every single day of the week. His offering for today happens to be Simpla, which is one of those themes that you look at and go…”I can see my blog in that skin”. Very nicely done, simple, two column, colorful, iconful, detailed theme for Wordpress. Thanks Phu.

  • WP Theme: Ginseng Coffee

WP Theme: Ginseng Coffee I like the coffee color scheme of this two column, rounded edge theme for Wordpress. There used to be an old theme with similar color tones (I cannot remember the name of it). (4)

  • Designer AdSense Ads

Designer AdSense Ads Darren has noticed adsense ads with some unique styling. I am not convinced that this would increase revenue but it sure makes the ads look a lot nicer on the page. I REALLY like the way Plan59 did their ads at the bottom of the page. (4)
  • QuickStart Rails

QuickStart Rails: I have been looking into Ruby quite a bit recently (I really miss having an editor like TextMate on Windows) and by some quirk of programming this article of Shanti’s from back in November showed up on my reader this morning. Pretty cool. (3)

  • Six tips on Blogging right

Six tips on Blogging right This is an excerpt from Robert Scoble and Shel Israel’s book on blogging. Nothing eye opening but some good 100 mile high pointers on what to get right before and after starting to blog. I believe this is directed more at the corporate blogger. (1)

Record me a voice message 2comments

Record me a message So I get the urge to try out Odeo, but more importantly, Odeo gives me the chance to have the (possibly) the first voice commenting system. Now all I have to do is figure out how to put the podcast for my messages into this post from Odeo.
Click here to leave a voice message for me (possibly to be broadcast over the web, so be kind)

Akismet: The Killer of Spam 6comments

As of last week, Akismet had blocked 100,000 spam comments from this blog. Yes, you read right, a cool hundred thousand. In respect for that milestone, would like to go on record as a paid subscriber of Akismet as of next month. Weblogtoolscollection.com has seen its share of spam and was mentioned in one of the blog updates of Akismet with numbers hovering in the 99.51% comment spam range. Akismet has served me well barring a few offbeat social spam comments and I feel that the developers deserve to be rewarded for their efforts and their service (though I wish I would make anywhere near the money that paid subscribers are supposed to be making from their blogs).

I was in the spam mitigation business with CSPAM and Three Strikes and though the service could only handle a few thousand blogs on my old server, it was quite a trip. It mostly managed itself and I was almost completely spam free during the time I used it. Even though I would like to think that CSPAM was the spark that led to Akismet (Matt and I talked briefly about CSPAM), I am sure the Akismet engine is much more sophisticated and optimized (and not written in PHP like CSPAM). The numbers and processing power needs can be astronomical from my experience. In about nine months CSPAM caught and removed about 700,000 spam comments, had a 10,000 word vocabulary and learned about ten comments a minute. In comparison, Akismet has caught 3,812,040 spam comments and growing and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Kudos to the developers.

In short, spam is down, real comments are up and I am a happy camper. I would encourage everyone to try Akismet for their Spam needs. I also urge heavy users to put their money where their Spam was and sign up as a subscribed user.
