Server moved again 13comments

If you like this post, please subscribe to our RSS feed to read our new posts every day.

The server move is done again and this time I hope to not fat finger anything. I did lose a large amount of traffic from Google and all my blogs and my revenue seems to have suffered tremendously from making this change. Here is to a lifetime of learning.

In case people are wondering, I decided to get a 1and1 root server. It was at the best price point and there were features I really appreciate. Here is my affiliate link for 1and1.

Thanks to everyone for being patient.

PS: If you sign up for 1and1 through my affiliate link, it helps me with my hosting charges. ;)

Get the most out of Chitika MiniMalls Another detailed insight into getting the most out of Chitika. I cannot stress enough that Chitika and Adsense do not go together without some hacking (you will violate their agreements). (2)
  • Autumn Themes

I have released two new themes to get you in the fall spirit. Autumn is a one column WordPress theme in pretty fall colors. Autumn II is the two column version. (0)

Network feud leads to Net blackout I have seen slow connections all morning and have been aware of this BGP feud for some time. The Cogent peers seem to be affected the worst. (2)

Weblogs Inc. bought by AOL for (I believe) $20 Million Wow. Lots of buzz in the blog news arena about this. Congrats to Jason. (5)
  • Macworld: The best blogging tools for the Mac

Macworld: The best blogging tools for the MacRight now, the blogging tools most popular with Mac users are TypePad and Movable Type, both from Six Apart; Blogspot and Blogger, from Blogger (now part of Google); and WordPress, an open-source tool. These five tools range in power and complexity from simple-but-limited (TypePad, Blogger, and Blogspot) to do-pretty-much-anything-but-may-require-coding (WordPress). Movable Type is somewhere between these two extremes. Thanks Google Alerts (1)

Is webstats4u (formerly Nedstat) hurting your site? 10comments

Is webstats4u (formerly Nedstat) hurting your site? All traces of Nedstat and/or webstats4u have been removed from all of my sites. There are many reasons for this removal.

  • The popups were just pure annoying
  • The popups might be violating AdSense (and other ad package) policies in spite of the fact that the popups were not contextual.
  • Though there is no empirical data to prove it, I have read in the past that popups might reduce Google traffic
  • Though there is no empirical data to prove it, I know for a fact that a large percentage of web visitors hate popups ;)
  • I refuse to allow the kind of tactics that webstats4u has decided to employ
  • There are way too many good online statistics packages (free ones) for anyone to continue using webstats4u

In addition to the above, I would like to clear IceRocket of any wrongdoing. The popups were a result of webstats4u and NOT IceRocket.

MT-Blacklist and Comment Spam Clearinghouse Closed Jay chooses to close down the clearinghouse to protest ubiquitous and unscrupulous programmers hitting the blacklist more than they should have. My personal view on blacklists aside, thanks for all your work Jay. Thanks to Threadwatch for the news. (3)

  • Writeboard

Writeboard Use “Collection” as the password to access the WriteBoard. Like Uploadbin (or Pastebin) on steroids. Well, steroids with a sprinkling of sanity. I cannot decide whether to think that this is something I never knew I wanted or something that I never knew I disliked. [UPDATE] Maybe I am imagining things, but I saw Wordpress blogging to work much like this Writeboard in a few (insert timeline here). (0)
  • WP Plugin: Chitika eMiniMalls

WP Plugin: Chitika eMiniMalls Darren over at Problogger.net had a great review of Chitika and I have been running them myself for some time (though this blog sucks with basically any and all kinds of clickthrough ads). Proel wrote this plugin to selectively add minimalls to posts. This could be useful if you only want to pick and choose your ad posts. I am not going to display an ad here for everyone to click. However, if you visit some of my other blogs, you can see the ads. (2)
  • 30GB Web Mail Launches Into Beta

30GB Web Mail Launches Into Beta: This takes the cake. Of course the 30gigs.com site is down with a mysql error. I wonder how long this one will last. Heck, I sticll haven’t filled up less than half of my GMail space (and hope never to do so!) [UPDATE] Site is back up but I notice this disclaimer “Notice: We collect personal information on this site.” Ummm… there was an uproar when Google wanted to read through email to generate ads. How do they think they can pull this off? (9)
