Cool Scripts

I have used a bunch of tools over the years to try to search within files, folder and drives, but have yet to find something that works everywhere and in every case. Lately, I have been using the Windows search tool (the one that comes default with the OS) with some success. So if you are on a Windows Platform, create an import.reg file with the following in it (where .phps is replaced with the extension of files you would like to search inside, such as .cfm .php or .xml). Multiple ones can be added by making copies of the registry key and replacing the extension. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.phps\PersistentHandler] @=”{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}” Save, double click, say yes, reboot and voila, now it searches inside those files for you. One little tip, try to edit with the default Windows editor or Notepad to get the best results.

WordPress Hack

There are some changes in order for that hack of mine. This hack counts the number of times users click on a certain permalink and then allows the creation of a “Most Popular Posts” list. This was written for WordPress 1.0 and now has been modified for WordPress 1.2 Mingus. You can see how it works on this blog and can download the instructions from here: http://weblogtoolscollection.com/b2-img/top10posts12.txt

General

I know that a lot of people understand the power of caching, but the numbers are elusive and difficult to pin down with real experiments. I saw an experiment online that tested and compared high load servers and decided to use the recently published staticise plugin as my test bed. I ran two seperate test sets, one with a vanilla WordPress 1.2 install with 20 posts on the main page and about 25 links in the link manager. The second set was on the same blog with Staticise 1.2 default install, no tweaks. This was run on a RedHat 9 machine with 512 megs of RAM and an Athlon 1000Mhz processor running its own MySql server. There was no network involved (localhost) and I did not have any other hosts hitting the machine with Apache requests. Apache Bench was used to create the results. As was demonstrated on the Mambo [...]
