[Continue Reading...]I had noticed this error on Carthik’s Blog and have since seen/noticed it on a couple of other sites as well. Here is the issue. When a blogging tool (such as WordPress) uses ob_start and then gzip compression to send pages to the client, at times, a (sometimes silent) warning pops up which basically means that the gzip compression is not really taking place. Here is an example of the error: Warning: ob_start(): output handler ‘ob_gzhandler’ cannot be used after ‘URL-Rewriter’ You can check this for your own site/blog by visiting http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ and analyzing your site. Make sure that you have gzip compression turned on in your WordPress control panel (or somewhere on your site, if not on WordPress) and see if the analyzer complains about gzip being turned off. More than likely, you will find that though gzip is turned on, it is not being used. In order to […]

[Continue Reading...]This blog has come a long way since I started it in October of last year. Today it turned the odometer at 100,000 unique visitors (unique IPs) and I am proud of the achievement. This blog has become my vehicle of development, of keeping in touch with the communities I am involved in and helping people. To think that this started as a pet project on my Linux server at home over a puny cable modem. This occassion has also coincided with the mention on the WordPress development blog and I really appreciate the attention. But I would like to share this wealth of visitors and the breadth of coverage that this blog enjoys. While you are here, if you were hoping to write on this blog, I welcome your articles and comments. Just register and shoot me an email with your intentions and I will give you permission to […]

[Continue Reading...]How annoying would it be to receive ads with RSS feeds. Imagine having to wade through every fifth article being a “sponsored” article. I dont use my feed reader much, but I am trying to understand how opposed people would be to this idea. However, on the flip side of the coin, a vanilla RSS feed with JUST news is lost revenue for someone that is interested in generating profits from their blog/business blog. I am planning to come up with a way to grab RSS feeds from an existing site, insert ads into these feeds (between posts) and then retransmit these feeds. So when someone signs up for these ads, they would have to change their RSS feed links to point to the new server. Alternatively, some up with a way to insert ads into existing RSS feeds (which I might try as a test on this blog sometime). […]
