Internet Explorer 7 (!!) 1comment

This is a direct quote from dean.edwards.name/IE7/intro/

compliance patch!
This is an attempt to make Microsoft Internet Explorer more compliant when it comes to web standards.
Web developers are becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of convergence of the major browser vendors. We need a level playing field!
CSS is a powerful technology. Many of it’s more advanced features go unused by web developers because of Explorer’s poor support of CSS standards.
IE7 provides support for most of the important CSS enhancements. A full list is available on the compatibility page.

Thought I would blog about it. Some people could really use it! :)

Automatic CSS layout generator and other cool web tools 2comments

I was browsing the page of Louis Clotman when I came across the Layout-o-Matic from InkNoise. This is not a new concept and has been done before. However, what makes this page so appealing to me is the ability to control the padding, body size and other elements of the CSS with just a few inputs. Check out this 3 column layout that I created using the tool.

Other tools offered by the site include The amazing Roll-over-er which creates XHTML compliant roll over icons and the List-O-Matic which creates complete lists that can be used in blogs, webpages etc and are controlled by various contributed code and CSS.

As always, thank them if you use their work!
PS: InkNoise also offers a cheap (starting at about 6 bucks) blogging tool/hosting alternative. The SXSW Community blog is powered by InkNoise.

WordPress MultiLinugual edition 1.0.2 1comment

Otsukare has released the WordPress 1.0.2 Multilingual edition. It can be downloaded at http://sourceforge.jp/projects/wordpress/files/ and some installation instructions can be found at http://wordpress.org/support/4/3293

The post does not really say what languages are supported in this version, but Japanese seems to the primary language. Please leave comments if you know more about the languages.

Bigger, Better, Badder referrer script! 0comments

Downes.ca referrer script is now more configurable, has Mysql support and has a more configurable display. You can see it at work at the bottom of this page and can get more information here.
It is distributed under the Creative Commons and counts the number of referrals from different sites. It also counts them by referrals today and by totals.

Thank you 0comments

A heartfelt thank you to all of you who have left me a donation in the recent past. I have been terribly busy switching over my servers and getting my thesis in order and have neglected my duties a little bit.
As you are already aware, there is a small donate icon (through Paypal) on the right hand menu. I will graciously accept and appreciate any donation towards the upkeep of this site, however small the donation might be.
There are more items that I would like to add on this site. I think NuclearMoose will be taking up the CSS end of things and I am trying to get a couple of other people to work with blogging tools other than WordPress. I am going to keep writing and documenting WordPress related items and listing my own work on here.

If you need custom scripts, a custom CSS, some help in installing WordPress (or any other blog tool) please feel free to contact me directly and we could set something up. Till then…blog away!

New web host search and a proposed solution 2comments

I might have to switch hosts. I have been looking for sometime now and would really like to switch to a dedicated server somewhere with root access. However, with my present financial restrictions, that is not possible (lowest price for a well known dedicated host I found was $49/m with $99 setup fee) I have narrowed my choices down to IXWebHosting They seem to have a pretty good plan and will cost me $20/m with a $20 setup fee which I can afford. I really dont want my cable modem to be turned off because of all of this web traffic. Here are some of the features of the “Gold Plan” that I am looking into:
Advanced Domain Hosting
+ UNLIMITED Disk Space
+ Host up to 6 Domains & 30 Sub Domains
+ 6 dedicated IPs, 30GB Data Transfer
+ SSL Hosting & Shared SSL included
+ CGI-BIN, Perl, PHP, SSI, FrontPage Extensions

3 FREE Domain Registrations

Additional Hosting Features
+ UNLIMITED Email Services
+ UNLIMITED FTP Users
+ 6 MySQL & 6 PostgreSQL databases

This will give Jennifer and Justin personal FTP access to their domains and they can have their own emails setup. This also gives all of my hostees unlimited web access and I get 3 free domain registrations! Looks like a winner to me.
I will start the purchasing process and then the laborious transfer in a couple of weeks. I will have my server up for sale at that point. Here are the details of my server, please email me if you are interested in purchasing it. I will ship it to you for free through UPS.

1 Ghz AMD Athlon processor
468 Mb 133Mhz RAM
10 GB IDE Hard Drive
40 GB IDE Hard Drive
CDROM, Floppy
32 MB Nvidia video card (needs replaced, graphics fuzzy in Linux)
Nice mid-tower case
Sound card, 56K modem
2 x 100 MBit NIC

Hand built from scratch and has run flawlessly (knock on wood) for over three years of non-stop usage. I am asking $300 for it. Negotiable.

Now back to the regularly scheduled thesis thumping! :)

Admin based WordPress CSS Style Manager Hack 12comments

This hack adds a style/theme manager to the WordPress admin panel and allows a blog owner to choose a style to be displayed. Addition of styles is as simple as creating new folder for styles and copying them to a wp-style folder in your WordPress folder. This hack is also Alex’s Style switcher compatible, though the tutorial is not updated with that info. It will be in a future release. This hack comes with 2 styles from the CSS styles competition.

Here is the link to the hack http://weblogtoolscollection.com/b2-img/wp_styles.zip

You can see it on display here

Please post bugs and feedback here.

New web template resource sighted 2comments

Very nice work by a “phrancey”. This site catalogs the work of its author and provides download links for the themes and templates that they have created for use in blogs. Very nice work. It looks like they are also offering to create custom designs for customers for about $10 (I might be wrong) However, some interesting designs nonetheless. Here is one I like a lot.

pinup

Here is the link to download that particular theme.

As always, if you use their work, please find a way to thank them! :)

WuhWuh 0.1 Functional Specifications and recruiting effort 1comment

I am actively seeking a couple of people to work with me on the WuhWuh project. At least one person (more preferable) to help with the documentation and one person to help me with the code. A word of warning for everyone interested in working with me. I am a stickler for thoroughness and I hate to work with people that do not keep their promises. That being said, I also do not really care how long it takes you to do something as long as you finish it within the time you decided on at the beginning of the project.

Here is what I am looking to achieve in terms of documentation:
1) We need an exhaustive run down of each hack implemented (you will have the list of hacks) including the url, original author, functions used, how to tweak the functions and where the function is added into the original WP code.
2) There will need to be exhaustive install/migrate documentation and ways to fix common issues (which should be added on as and when they are discovered)
3) We need a Functional Specification for WW (this will require most work and deserves most energy) From a users’ perspective, we need to know how to use each hack in great detail and how each hack can be helpful
4) Once the Release Candidate is out, work will be needed to come up with a Functional Specification for WuhWuh version 1.0 (in keeping with WordPress Version 1.2 or the next big release)

Here is what I am looking to achieve with code:
1) Most of the hacks listed below have already been implemented. Some changes/additions need to be made which I will work on.
2) I would like to see each hack controlled from the main wp-admin interface. I need someone to help me with that.
3) I REALLY want to implement 2 different hacks which I will need help with:
- Comments for Links in the Link manager (destined for WuhWuh 0.1 RC2)
- Multiple Blog capability: This hack has to be seperately implementable into a vanilla WP install, and of course in WuhWuh RC2
4) The original design for WuhWuh 0.1 was to start with a new installation and not provide a “migration tool”. That goal has changed since the inception. I need some help in creating scripts to add the database changes (in a vanilla, already populated WP install) for a WW install. So the “migration” would mean running a php script to modify the database and replace exisiting WP files with WW files. Simple and succint.

If you would like to get involved, please email me at dinki at mac dot com

This project is NOT going to be publicized in the WordPress forums and I will appreciate any links or publicity from individuals wishing to help make its presence known. :)
